Short version
This is a personal site. I use Google Analytics to understand which posts get read and how people find the site. That's it — no ads, no third-party data sharing, no profile building, no selling anything to anyone. Analytics doesn't run until you accept the cookie banner. You can change your mind any time via Cookie preferences in the footer.
Who runs this site
Jared Smith, a staff software engineer based in California. The site is sublimecoding.com. For privacy questions or data requests, jared@sublimecoding.com is the fastest way to reach me.
What data is collected
There are two ways data touches this site:
1. Contact form
If you submit the contact form on the homepage, I receive your name and message. I use that information to reply to you, and nothing else. Messages are stored in my server logs for up to 90 days, then rotated out.
2. Google Analytics (only with your consent)
If you click Accept on the cookie banner, the site loads Google Analytics 4. GA sets a cookie and reports the following to Google on my behalf:
- Pages you visit on sublimecoding.com and the order you visit them in
- Approximate location derived from your IP (country / region — the full IP is anonymized before storage)
- Device type, browser, and operating system
- Referrer (where you arrived from) and the search terms if you came via search
- Engagement events I've configured: outbound link clicks, social icon clicks, email/phone clicks, resume clicks, file downloads, scroll depth, and contact form submissions
I never tie these to your name or email. I don't sell this data, I don't share it with advertisers, and I've turned off Google Signals and ad personalization. IP anonymization is on. If you decline the banner, none of this fires — Google's scripts load in a "denied" state that sets no cookies.
Legal basis (for readers in the EU/UK)
Under GDPR and UK GDPR the lawful bases are:
- Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)) for Google Analytics. You give it through the cookie banner and can withdraw at any time.
- Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f)) for processing your contact form submission in order to respond to you.
Who processes the data
- Google LLC — provides Google Analytics 4. Their privacy policy and Analytics data safeguards apply to that portion.
- My hosting provider — runs the web server and sees standard HTTP request logs. Logs are rotated regularly.
Cookies used
-
sc_consent— a localStorage entry (technically not a cookie) that remembers whether you accepted or declined analytics. Set only by you. -
_ga,_ga_FZPZDFZJBF— Google Analytics 4 session and client identifiers. Only set after you accept the banner. Expire after 2 years. -
_sublime_coding_key— session cookie used only to protect the contact form from cross-site request forgery. No tracking.
How long data is kept
- GA data retention is set to the 14-month minimum
- Contact-form submissions live in server logs for up to 90 days
- Email I receive through the contact form stays in my inbox until I archive or delete it — usually within a few months of a conversation ending
Your rights
If you're in the EU, UK, or California, you have the right to:
- Ask what data I hold about you
- Ask me to correct or delete it
- Ask me to stop using it for a specific purpose
- Ask for a copy in a portable format
- Withdraw your analytics consent at any time via Cookie preferences in the footer
- Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority
Email jared@sublimecoding.com to exercise any of these. I'll respond within 30 days.
Children
This site isn't aimed at children under 16 and I don't knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has submitted information through the site, email me and I'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If I change how the site collects or uses data, I'll update this page and refresh the effective date at the top. Continued use of the site after a change means acceptance of the updated policy.
